Parliament Endorsed Abiy Ahmed (PhD) as Prime Minister
The Ethiopian House of Peoples' Representatives (HPR) has endorsed Abiy Ahmed(PhD) as Prime Minister proposed by the governing party, EPRDF. Abiy was elected as chairperson of the Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front ( EPRDF) last week, has sworn in as the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) today April 2, 2018.
Abiy has taken the power from the hands of the former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in peaceful and exemplary manner.
Following the handing over ceremony, the newly elected Prime Minister Abiy has delivered a nationwide televised address to the peoples of Ethiopia.
He has noted in his speech that the handing over of the power peacefully illustrates major facts about democracy, justice, and sustainable peace the country is building.
He also stated that EPRDF has enabled the country to achieve fast economic growth and development in all sectors in its ruling period for more than two decades.
In his address, the Prime Minister pledged to solve the disputes with Eretria.
Abiy has showed the government's commitments to work for inclusive development, fight against corruption and widen the democratic space in the country.
The country looks forward to ensure and strengthen the continuity of the fast and sustainable growth it achieved and to avoid the draw backs observed, the Prime Minister added.
He further said that the governing party EPRDF will discuss with the opposition political parties peacefully on the differences so as to narrow the gaps democratically.
